But WHY do we do it?
Mel says
“Over the 17 years I was Managing Director, I spent one third of my time working ON the business and two-thirds hands-on in the business sorting out issues around cash, people, product, customers, suppliers, systems. But the time I actually spent ON the business, we scaled, innovated, made great hires, promoted A-star employees, entered new markets, gained new customers and strengthened its brand.”
Mel spotted the pattern recurring over the years, and goes on to say “I knew this was not the right balance and best use of my time. So I started to explore options to tackle the issues we were finding whilst scaling-up. Over the years I joined Vistage and Nexus CEO peer groups, had business coaching, attended leadership training, attended workshops run by their accountants and banks, networked, accessed grants and support for the business. I also brought in consultants, specialists and part-time help to support the leadership team. Some of the initiatives made a few individual positive dents, but there never was that sizable shift and sustainable scale of the business. Instead it was a slow slog, requiring my 24/7 support which felt increasingly more frustrating as I grew further away from where I knew I could make the biggest difference.”
